How a Plate Heat Exchanger Works

A plate heat exchanger transfers thermal energy between two fluids, hot and cold, without letting them mix. It uses thin, corrugated metal plates stacked in an alternating pattern that separates the fluids and allows thermal energy to flow from one stream to the other.

Depending on the model, the plates may be sealed with gaskets, brazed together or welded together to direct each fluid into counter-current flow where they move in opposite directions through the unit. Due to the counter-current flow mechanism, the unit maintains a consistent temperature difference across the entire exchanger, maximizing heat recovery rate.

Plate Heat Exchanger vs. Shell and Tube Exchangers

Plate heat exchangers have several advantages over traditional shell and tube exchangers. Here’s how they compare: 

  • Equipment footprint: Unlike bulky shell and tube exchangers, plate heat exchangers deliver their thermal duty while requiring less floor space. 
  • Thermal performance: Shell and tube exchangers typically require a wide temperature approach. Plate heat exchangers can achieve a significantly tighter approach and offer a higher level of heat recovery in the right application. 
  • Capacity flexibility: With gasketed plate heat exchangers, plates can often be added, removed or reconfigured to adjust thermal capacity as your facility’s demand grows. Conversely, shell and tube units are entirely fixed. 
  • Cleaning and servicing: While shell and tube units require bundle pulling for maintenance, gasketed exchangers are designed to be unbolted and cleaned on-site without removing piping.
